Te Aranui o Te Rangihaeata – Transmission Gully motorway forms part of SH1. It provides important regional resilience and a safe, modern, reliable route to and from Wellington. The motorway has been open to the public since March 2022 however, some construction related works are yet to be completed.
Transmission Gully changes the way people move around the region for the better – providing a resilient and reliable route in and out of Te Upoko o te Ika a Maui – Wellington, improving safety for everyone, offering better access for communities in eastern Porirua, improving access to the Hutt Valley through a connection with SH58 at Pāuatahanui, significantly reducing traffic volumes on the coastal SH59 route, and cutting peak travel times in and out of the capital by 7 to 15 minutes in each direction.
It is the first motorway in Aotearoa New Zealand to be constructed on behalf of the New Zealand Government under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) contract. The Government’s PPP contract is with Wellington Gateway Partnership.
The 27 kilometre motorway is also a key part of the Wellington Northern Corridor.
